Discord Bot Troubleshooting

If you’re experiencing issues with Scryfall’s Discord bot, please review this page for common problems and things to test.

The bot does not reply at all

  • Check the Discord status to see if anything is currently affecting messages.
  • Make sure the bot is visible on the user list. If it’s not visible, the bot does not have access to your current channel.
  • Check your Discord permissions very carefully to ensure you have not restricted the bot’s ability to see messages and speak in the current channel. The bot requires all of these permissions to work correctly:
    • Read Message History
    • Send Messages
    • Send Messages in Threads
    • Embed Links
    • Attach Files
    • Add Reactions
    • Use External Emoji
  • Try in more than one channel, especially in your most open and most restrictive channels
  • Try sending the bot a direct message for a card, like [[Chromanticore]]. If the bot replies, then the issue lies with your server permissions.
  • Try kicking the bot from your server, then visit https://scryfall.com/bots to re-invite it.

The bot replies slowly or after a long delay

  • Check the Discord status to see if anything is currently affecting messages
  • Unfortunately, even without an active incident, some days on Discord are particularly high traffic and Discord may transmit chat events slower than normal to Scryfall. Keep monitoring the Discord status page, and check back in a few hours to see if speed improves.

The bot posts blank or empty messages

  • The bot attaches card data as links. In your Discord settings, make sure you have Text & Images → Link Preview turned on.

Mana symbols appear as text like :manaw: or :mana3:
